INCLUSIVE HOUSEBOAT PROJECT
2022
The Nautical Centre LNI “BEYOND BARRIERS”, in the Cala of Palermo, has ordered the first inclusive Houseboat: a semi-custom product made in one piece by local workers. Over the past two decades, more attention has been paid to the issue of architectural barriers. Inclusive design must take into account many aspects of the product or service being designed, with a view to the future: the aging and longevity of the population, the dignity of people, the usability of products, their aesthetics of and the role of technology.
Erosion of universal health coverage in Spain
2013
Whereas the recent UN resolution urges governments to accelerate progress towards universal access to affordable and quality health-care services, the Spanish Government, bypassing the parliamentary procedure, enacted a Royal Decree to limit access to free services at the point of delivery for all-undermining the principle of universal coverage. Spanish health and social service budgets have been subjected to large cuts (13,7% in 2012 and 16,2% in 2013) with some regions imposing additional budget cuts.
Colorectal cancer stage at diagnosis in migrants versus non-migrants (KoMigra) : study protocol of a cross-sectional study in Germany
2014
Background: In Germany, about 20% of the total population have a migration background. Differences exist between migrants and non-migrants in terms of health care access and utilisation. Colorectal cancer is the second most common malignant tumour in Germany, and incidence, staging and survival chances depend, amongst other things, on ethnicity and lifestyle. The current study investigates whether stage at diagnosis differs between migrants and non-migrants with colorectal cancer in an area of high migration and attempts to identify factors that can explain any differences. Methods/Design: Data on tumour and migration status will be collected for 1,200 consecutive patients that have receive…
A multicenter survey on access to care in Multiple Sclerosis-related trigeminal neuralgia
2021
The prevalence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is higher than in the general population and its management can be particularly challenging due to a number of reasons including high recurrence rates, lack of MS-specific treatment guidelines and uncertainties about pain pathophysiology. Aim of this cross-sectional, multicentre survey was to gather information on the current treatment modalities and options of MS-related TN across 23 Italian MS centres. Initial medical management (carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine) of MS-related TN was fairly homogeneous throughout Italian centres. The most commonly available surgical procedure was microvascular decompression…

“They’re always in a hurry” – Older people´s perceptions of access and recognition in health and social care services
2019
The article examines older people's perceptions of quality of life from the perspective of access and use of health and social care services. The data include focus group discussions with older people living alone. The data were analysed using thematic analysis focusing on the older people's collective views on health and social care services as supportive or restrictive factors for their quality of life. Two central themes were present in all the focus group discussions: the importance of accessing services and information regarding the services, and need for recognition within the services/by the professionals. Both themes were connected to the older people's desire to maintain autonomy i…
From limit to centrality. Regeneration of the Genoa's port area through architectural and urban design
2012
This survey’s core is the case study of the regeneration of the port area and of the urban waterfront of the city of Genoa, as an emblematic example where the architectural and urban design plays an important role, oriented to the transformation of the port area and to the modification of the relationship that exists between the harbour and the city. In particular this will deepen the possibility, to reverse the condition of limit that characterizes the port area into a new centrality, through the design, passing by intermediate steps that redefine the modalities of access and of connection between city and port, breaking the condition of isolation that ports usually present. As a matter of…
Real life experiences in HCV management in 2018
2019
Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease, with approximately 71 million chronically infected individuals worldwide. Treatment of chronic hepatitis C has considerably improved in the last few years thanks to the introduction of direct-acting antivirals able to achieve sustained virological response in more than 95% of patients. Successful anti-HCV treatment can halt liver disease progression and solve the HCV-related extra-hepatic manifestations, eventually reducing liver-related and overall mortality. Areas covered: With the aim to respond to unmet needs in patient’s identification, universal access to antiviral therapy and treatment optimiza…
An integrated approach to architectural heritage conservation through preservation and accessibility
2015
Historical architecture preservation in an historic centre, shouldn’t leave out of consideration the analysis of the architecture itself , an analysis that acknowledges the original structure , the endless changes and the altering brought about by various needs of use as well as by natural phenomena and atmospheric events (earthquakes , pollution, anthropical damages). Historical buildings have also been damaged by the lack of understanding of these phenomena : further damages were caused by inadeguate laws (L.457/58) whose text is too old fashioned if we take into consideration the already settled notions on conservation . These notions are meant to provide : 1 - the ability to read these …
